A Chamfer That Gives the Light Back

Set a chamfered edge on a 150 x 75mm gloss brick and a dark wall gains a fine line of light along every joint: that is the Artworks Royal Blue Metro Bevelled Tile 150 x 75mm, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

The bevel is a shallow chamfer worked around all four edges before glazing, so the glaze runs over the angle and stays glossy across it. The body is 10mm, which is what allows the chamfer to be cut with any real depth. Laid up, the chamfers of neighbouring tiles meet to form a shallow V at every joint, and the wall gains a surface relief that a flat-faced tile does not have.

On a deep indigo the chamfer earns its keep. The flat of the tile absorbs light and returns very little; the angled edges catch it and give it back as a bright thread, so a wall that would otherwise read as one solid dark plane is drawn out into legible courses. Taken floor to ceiling in a shower, the effect is a dark surface you can still read; taken to half height under a cornice, the bevel lines carry the horizontal along the room. It is worth being plain about what a deep glaze does: it takes light out of a room rather than moving it about, so a small space will feel smaller and more enclosing — welcome in a cloakroom, a decision to make deliberately anywhere else.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Additional supplier returns have their own eligibility rules, charges and exclusions. These do not override statutory cancellation rights or rights for faulty goods. See our refund policy and supplier return guidance before arranging a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Royal Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. For a floor to sit beneath a Royal Blue wall, a black and white geometric or an encaustic-effect tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what stops a large tiled wall looking printed. On a colour this deep the variation reads as movement in the glaze rather than as patchiness. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Royal Blue?

Use a white flexible adhesive. For grout, go dark and close in tone: a deep grey, a charcoal, or a blue-grey pitched near the tile's own depth. Against an indigo this deep, brilliant white draws a bright net across the wall and the tile ends up disappearing behind its own joints. A mid grey is the other one to avoid — too light to belong to the colour and too dark to read as a deliberate contrast, so it simply looks tired. Grout haze shows more readily on a deep gloss glaze than on a pale one, so sponge each section down as you go rather than leaving it.

Is Royal Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Royal Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Royal Blue is the deep one. Original Style describe it as a deep indigo with an air of nobility, and it is the only blue in the range that behaves like a dark colour rather than a coloured one — it absorbs light where the others return it. The alternatives are all lighter and all pull in different directions: one is a warmer blue with a green cast, one a versatile mid-blue, and one a blue-grey that shifts with the light and reads almost as a neutral. If you are weighing Royal Blue against any of them, order cut samples of both and look at them on the actual wall at the time of day you use the room — a colour this deep changes more between rooms than a mid-tone does.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Royal Blue?

Eighteen — the fullest set of any of the blues. The 152mm field tile and its half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings: Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner wrapping pieces to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if a scheme needs one.

What does the bevelled edge do?

The chamfer around each face catches light along its top and casts a fine shadow beneath, so every tile is outlined before the grout goes in. On a colour as deep as Royal Blue that outline reads as a bright line against a dark field, and a bevelled wall carries noticeably more movement across it than a flat-faced one — the effect is strongest here of anywhere in the blue family. If you want a deep blue that still has life in it under artificial light, this is the format to choose.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Use white flexible adhesive. The grout wants to be dark and close — charcoal, deep slate or a blue-grey a touch off the glaze — so that the bright lines on the wall are the ones the chamfers make and nothing else. Brilliant white sets a second, harder line alongside every chamfer and the bevel loses the very effect it was cut for. Nor is a mid grey a safe middle course. Every chamfer already puts a fine light line on the wall; set a joint of undecided tone between them and the two run together into a muddle, so the crispness the bevel was cut for is spent twice over. Haze is more obvious on a deep gloss, so sponge little and often and buff up at the end.
  • Layout: Half-bond is the traditional setting for a metro brick and the one the chamfer flatters, since the V-joints line through horizontally and step neatly on the vertical. Keep the joints tight and even: the chamfer already reads as a joint, so a wide one looks doubled. Stacked and herringbone settings both work, but plan the perimeter cuts first, because a cut tile loses its bevel on the cut side — and at an outside corner the external corner trim keeps a glazed edge where a cut chamfer could not.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
