Two Tiles That Only Make Sense Together

This Fleur de Lis set comprises two 152 x 152 x 7mm ceramic tiles whose real platinum decoration completes a single motif across the pair, fired on a Brilliant White ground, and it is boxed and sent from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Two tiles, one design: the platinum fleur de lis is drawn across both squares and resolves only when they are laid in the order they were supplied. That is the whole difference between a set and a strip. On a 25mm border the motif is a small repeated ornament read at close quarters; at 152mm square, doubled, it becomes a piece of drawing big enough to be taken in properly from the far side of a room. Run as a course the tiles give 6.6 to the linear metre, so a 3.2 metre band wants twenty-two of them — 3.2 multiplied by 6.6 is 21.12, rounded up — which comes to eleven sets.

Scale is what is really being bought here, and it changes how the pair ought to be used. A border draws a line; two squares make a panel, and a panel wants a place of its own rather than a continuous run. Set one pair centrally above a basin, or behind a hob, or halfway up a chimney breast, and let plain tiling do everything around it. Spaced at intervals instead — one set, then six plain squares, then another set — it reads as a rhythm across the wall, which is a different job from the one a running course does.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

To request a return, contact Hyperion within 14 days of delivery. For eligible online consumer cancellations, you have a further 14 days after telling us to send the goods back. Contact us for the correct return address; your statutory cancellation does not depend on our authorisation.

Additional supplier returns have their own eligibility rules, charges and exclusions. These do not override statutory cancellation rights or rights for faulty goods. See our refund policy and supplier return guidance before arranging a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Platinum be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Every Artworks piece in this finish is rated for internal walls, wet and dry, so a shower enclosure, wet room walls, the wall behind a bath and a splashback are all within scope. There is nothing to seal.

The caveat is about maintenance rather than suitability. A metallic finish shows water marks and limescale sooner than a coloured glaze, and the usual remedy — a descaling spray — is precisely what will damage it. In a hard water area, plan to wipe it down while it is wet rather than to clean it chemically later. On that basis it is entirely at home in a bathroom.

What it is not rated for is a floor. Artworks is a wall range from end to end.

Can I use Platinum on a floor?

No, and here the answer is firmer than for the rest of the range. Artworks is a wall glaze throughout and is not rated for foot traffic, but a metallic finish has a further problem: the brightness is a surface effect, and walking on it would take it off. The decorated tiles carrying real gold and platinum are the same.

That is rarely a constraint in practice, since the pieces made in this finish are a skirting, two narrow mouldings and a half tile — borders and bands rather than fields. Tell us the room and we will suggest a floor to sit beneath it. Call 01344 620211, or come to the showroom.

Will the finish vary between boxes of Platinum?

There is some variation, as with any fired metallic, and it shows differently from the variation you get on a coloured glaze. What differs is not hue but the exact quality of the reflection — how bright, how even — and on a surface bought for its brightness that is worth taking seriously.

Order the whole job at once and ask us to confirm the batch when we book it, and keep a spare piece or two from it. Because these pieces are used in short runs rather than across whole walls, a single continuous run drawn from one batch is usually easy to achieve if the order is placed in one go.

How do I clean Platinum and the metallic decorated tiles?

Warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Nothing else. This is the one part of the Artworks range where the cleaning advice is not a formality: the Platinum finish and the gold and platinum decoration are real precious metal fired onto the face of the tile, and they behave like metal rather than like a coloured glaze.

What to keep away from it: acidic limescale removers and descaling sprays, cream cleaners, scouring pads, anything gritty, and bleach-based sprays left to sit on the surface. Any of those will dull or lift the metal, and unlike a scratch in an ordinary glaze the damage cannot be polished out. Think of it as you would a gilded frame or a piece of silver plate.

In a shower or above a basin in a hard water area, the practical answer is to wipe the surface down while it is still wet rather than to let deposits build up and then attack them with a chemical. Done that way it keeps its brightness indefinitely.

Is Platinum in stock, and how is it delivered?

The four plain pieces and the eight decorated tiles are usually in stock. Because several of them are sold by the piece or in small packs rather than by the square metre, it is worth sending your run lengths over so we can confirm quantities and availability before anything is committed.

Delivery is free on UK orders over £1,000. You are very welcome at our family-run showroom at 67 High Street, Ascot, where the Original Style range can be seen in person, or speak to the team on 01344 620211.

Which pieces are available in Platinum?

Four, and we stock all four: the Half Tile, the Skirting Tile 152x152mm, the Sigma Moulding 152x26mm and the Omega Moulding 152x12mm. That is the complete list Original Style make in this finish.

There is deliberately no field tile, no cornice, no corner trim and no ornamented moulding in Platinum. It is an accent finish rather than a tiling finish, and it is designed to be used against plain tiling in another Artworks colour — a bright band at the top of a dado, a skirting course, a fine line of metal closing an edge. Anyone planning a whole wall in it is planning something the range does not support.

Alongside the four plain pieces we also stock eight decorative tiles carrying real platinum, several of them with real gold as well: two Art Deco Fans, two Manhattan Borders, two Fleur de Lis Borders and two Fleur de Lis two-tile sets, on Brilliant White, County White or black grounds. Those are decorated tiles rather than Platinum tiles, and they are the usual way people bring the metal into a scheme.

What should I put Platinum with?

Because it is a brightness rather than a hue, it has nothing to clash with, so the question is really which plain Artworks colour you run it against. It is at its sharpest on the darks — a bright metal line across Jet Black or Charcoal Grey is the strongest thing this range can do — and at its quietest on the whites, where it reads as a fine silver edge rather than a statement.

For metalwork, chrome, nickel and polished steel sit with it exactly; brass and aged gold set up a deliberate warm-against-cool contrast, which is the logic behind the decorative tiles that carry both metals at once. Mirror and cut glass amplify it. It is equally at home in a period scheme and a modern one, which is not true of most of the range.

Bring us the colour you are tiling in and we will put the two together on the bench. Our showroom is at 67 High Street, Ascot, and the team are on 01344 620211.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Is the gold and platinum on the decorative tiles real metal?

Yes. The Art Deco Fans and the Manhattan Borders carry real gold and real platinum, and the Fleur de Lis pieces carry real platinum lustre. The metal is applied to the finished tile and fired again at a lower temperature, which bonds it permanently to the face.

Permanently bonded is not the same as indestructible. The decoration sits on the surface rather than beneath a protective layer of glaze, so it needs the care set out in our cleaning answer — no acids, no abrasives, no descaling sprays. Fixed sensibly and cleaned gently it will outlast most of what else is in the room; attacked with a limescale spray it will not.

It is also why these tiles are priced as they are, and why they are sold by the piece or in small packs rather than by the square metre. They are made to be used sparingly, as a border or a panel within plain tiling.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix on a white flexible adhesive, and a white joint will keep the pair reading as one panel, whereas anything darker draws a rule straight through the middle of the motif. Treat the platinum as a gold-rimmed dinner service is treated: washed by hand, never scoured, never left standing in anything acidic. A limescale spray or a cream cleaner takes fired lustre off for good, in circumstances where the plain glaze beside it would come through unmarked.
  • Layout: The two tiles are not interchangeable. Unwrap them, set them out in the supplied order and mark the backs before they go anywhere near adhesive, because a reversed pair announces itself only once the grout has gone off. Centre the panel on whatever it belongs to — the basin, the hob, the window — rather than on the wall as a whole.
  • Cleaning: There is nothing to seal; the gloss glaze is non-porous. Warm water and a mild detergent will do it. Abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers should be avoided, as both will flatten the shine over the years.
