Rugged Natural Character: Ardosia Slate 30 x 60cm

A diamond sawn-edge natural slate in a generous 30 x 60cm plank — Ardosia from Hyperion Tiles, your official Fired Earth stockist.

Quarried in Brazil, Ardosia is a true riven slate with all the depth and drama of natural stone. Each tile shifts through charcoal and graphite greys, lifted by warm veins of gold, rust and mineral colour, so no two are ever quite alike. The lightly textured, cleft surface catches the light beautifully, while the diamond sawn edges give clean, precise joints.

Hardwearing and frost-resistant, Ardosia is specified for interior and exterior walls and floors, wet rooms and hallways. As a natural stone it should be sealed before and after grouting to protect its surface and enrich its colour.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Sealing: As a natural slate, Ardosia must be sealed with a suitable stone sealer before grouting and again after installation to protect the surface and deepen its tones.
  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a flexible stone adhesive and a colour-matched grout. For wet and external areas, specify a frost-resistant, exterior-grade system throughout.
  • Cleaning: Sweep and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner — avoid acidic or abrasive products that can damage natural slate.
Samples

Tone, glaze and veining all read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free — sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and we refund it on tile orders over £50 with the code we email you. Our family-run team is happy to check quantities and finishes with you on 01344 620211.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Fired Earth ranges are returned through Fired Earth’s own returns process, and special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tile need sealing?

Yes. Ardosia is real natural slate. Like all natural stone, it requires sealing to make it water and stain-resistant. We recommend applying a high-quality impregnating sealer during installation and topping it up every few years depending on foot traffic.

Why is the thickness variable?

The slate is split naturally along its geological layers (riven), which results in slightly different thicknesses (0.5cm to 1.2cm). This is a deliberate feature to give the floor a genuine, rustic character. It is not a manufacturing defect. A professional tiler will adjust the adhesive depth to ensure the top surface is level.

Is it suitable for outdoors?

Yes! Ardosia is frost-resistant and durable, making it an excellent choice for patios and pathways. Using the same tile inside (kitchen) and outside (patio) is a popular way to create a seamless "infinity" living space.

What does "Diamond Sawn Edge" mean?

While the surface of the tile is textured and uneven (riven), the four edges have been cut straight with a diamond saw. This creates a clean, rectangular shape that allows for neater, tighter grout joints than a "chipped" or "tumbled" edge, giving you a rustic floor with a slightly more refined, modern outline.

Is it suitable for Underfloor Heating?

Yes. Slate is a dense natural stone that conducts and holds heat efficiently. It is one of the best materials to use with UFH systems, keeping your room warm and cozy.
