Product story
Alhambra Odyssey Porcelain/Ceramic Tiles - 15 x 15cm
If you've ever visited the Alhambra Palace, you've likely admired the stunning glazed tiles that decorate its walls and floors. Inspired by these timeless patterns from Andalusia, our Alhambra tile design brings that same beauty into your home. Part of our Odyssey tile collection, this 15 x 15cm tile range combines design influences from around the world and across history to create unique, handcrafted tiles for any space. Many of our tiles are inspired by ancient and classical patterns, carefully crafted in our Devon studio and then captured on high-quality ceramic or porcelain. Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, or feature walls, our tiles are designed to blend style, history, and durability.
Why Choose Alhambra Odyssey Tiles?
The Alhambra tiles pay homage to one of the world's most celebrated architectural treasures—the Alhambra Palace in Granada, where Islamic artistry reached its zenith during the 13th and 14th centuries. Our faithful recreation captures the intricate geometric patterns and mesmerising tessellations that have inspired designers for over 700 years. Each tile features the mathematical precision and artistic beauty that characterises Moorish design: interlocking stars, polygons, and arabesques that create infinite patterns when laid together.
What sets our Alhambra tiles apart is the meticulous handcrafted process in our Devon studio. Master craftsmen create the original designs by hand, ensuring authentic detail and character before the patterns are captured on premium ceramic or porcelain. This unique approach combines traditional artisanship with modern durability, resulting in tiles that possess both soul and practicality. The 15 x 15cm format is historically accurate to many original Andalusian tiles, allowing for authentic pattern creation while remaining practical for modern installation.
Perfect Spaces for Alhambra Odyssey Tiles
Kitchen Splashbacks & Feature Walls
Transform your kitchen with the exotic elegance of Andalusian design. The intricate patterns create stunning splashbacks that become instant focal points, while the glazed surface makes cleaning effortless. The 15 x 15cm format allows for creative layouts—use as a full splashback, frame windows, or create decorative panels behind open shelving. The geometric patterns hide minor splashes and marks while adding sophisticated cultural richness to both traditional and contemporary kitchens. Explore our kitchen splashback tile ideas for more inspiration.
Bathroom Walls & Shower Enclosures
Create your own palace-inspired sanctuary with Alhambra tiles adorning bathroom walls. Perfect for shower enclosures where the glazed surface reflects light and water beautifully, creating a jewel-like effect. Use floor-to-ceiling for dramatic impact, or create feature strips and borders for subtle elegance. The patterns' complexity means you can tile entire walls without monotony, while the water-resistant properties ensure lasting beauty in wet environments. Browse our full mosaic tiles collection for complementary options.
Entrance Halls & Cloakrooms
Make an unforgettable first impression with Alhambra tiles in entrance areas. The intricate patterns draw the eye and create immediate interest, perfect for smaller spaces like cloakrooms where you want maximum impact. Consider using as a feature floor in porcelain, or create stunning wall panels that showcase the mathematical beauty of Islamic design. The 15 x 15cm scale works perfectly in compact spaces without overwhelming. Pair with our Victorian floor tile patterns for a truly unique entrance.
Conservatories & Garden Rooms
Bridge indoor and outdoor living with tiles that echo Mediterranean courtyards and Moorish gardens. The light-reflecting glazed surface brightens conservatories, while the patterns create visual interest that complements garden views. Use on floors (porcelain version recommended) or walls to create a romantic, exotic atmosphere reminiscent of Andalusian palace gardens. For outdoor applications, explore our outdoor porcelain tiles.
Feature Floors & Decorative Panels
Create show-stopping floors in dining rooms, hallways, or bathrooms with the porcelain version's enhanced durability. The geometric patterns naturally create 'rugs' and defined areas within larger spaces. Alternatively, use as decorative wall panels in living areas, bedrooms, or studies—framed sections create artwork-like features that celebrate global design heritage. Commercial Spaces
Perfect for restaurants, hotels, and retail spaces seeking authentic cultural character. The Alhambra design adds sophistication to Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or fusion restaurants, boutique hotel bathrooms, or luxury retail environments. The timeless patterns never date, ensuring lasting appeal in commercial settings.

Installation & Care
Installation Requirements
- Interior Walls: Suitable for all interior walls including kitchens and bathrooms
- Interior Floors: Ceramic floors suitable for low-traffic areas; porcelain recommended for high-traffic
- Wet Areas: Both versions suitable, ensure proper waterproofing behind tiles
- Professional installation recommended for pattern alignment
- Use white or light grey adhesive to prevent colour showing through
- Careful planning essential for pattern continuity
- 2-3mm grout joints recommended for clean pattern flow
- Order 10-15% extra for pattern matching and cuts
- Plan layout carefully to ensure pattern symmetry
Pattern Layout Considerations
The geometric nature of Alhambra patterns requires careful planning. Dry-lay tiles before installation to ensure pattern alignment and identify the best starting point. Consider the visual centre of the space and work outwards. For complex patterns, number tiles on the back during dry-laying to maintain correct sequence during installation.
Easy Maintenance
The glazed surface makes maintenance effortless. Simply wipe with a damp cloth for daily cleaning, or use mild pH-neutral cleaners for deeper cleaning. The glazed finish resists staining and doesn't require sealing. For bathroom installations, use appropriate bathroom cleaners to prevent limescale buildup. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the glazed surface.
Grout Selection
- White: Clean, bright, makes patterns pop, authentic to original palace tiles
- Light Grey: Subtle definition, softens pattern intensity, contemporary feel
- Matching Colour: Creates seamless pattern flow, tiles appear as single surface
- Contrasting: Bold modern statement, emphasises geometric structure
Cutting & Handling
The 15 x 15cm format is easier to handle than large-format tiles. Standard tile cutters work well for straight cuts. For intricate cuts around fixtures, use tile nippers or wet saw. Handle with care to protect glazed surface and edges. The handcrafted origin means slight variations are normal and add authentic character.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the ceramic and porcelain versions?
Both feature the same beautiful Alhambra patterns and glazed finish. Ceramic is perfect for walls and light-traffic floors, offering traditional depth of colour and slightly softer body that's easier to cut. Porcelain is denser, more durable, and has lower water absorption, making it ideal for floors, high-traffic areas, and outdoor use (check specific product specifications). Both are suitable for walls and wet areas. Learn more about porcelain vs ceramic tiles.
How do I ensure pattern continuity?
Pattern planning is crucial with geometric designs. We recommend dry-laying your tiles before installation to understand the pattern repeat and identify the best starting point. Our team can provide pattern layout guides for complex installations. Order sufficient tiles from the same batch, including 10-15% extra for cuts and future repairs. Consider having your tiler number the backs of tiles during dry-laying.
Can these be mixed with plain tiles?
Absolutely! Many customers create stunning designs by combining Alhambra patterns with solid colours from our range. This allows you to control the visual intensity—use patterns as feature areas and plains for breathing space. Popular combinations include patterned splashbacks with plain surrounds, or patterned 'rugs' within plain floors. Explore our yellow tiles or pink tiles collections for vibrant solid options.
Are these authentic recreations?
Our Alhambra tiles are inspired by original palace designs, capturing the mathematical beauty and artistic spirit of Moorish tilework. While we've adapted patterns for modern production and installation methods, we've maintained the authentic proportions, geometric principles, and visual impact that make these designs timeless. The handcrafted process in our Devon studio ensures each batch has character and soul.
How many tiles do I need per square metre?
With 15 x 15cm tiles, you need approximately 44 tiles per square metre, accounting for standard grout joints. However, always order 10-15% extra for cuts, pattern matching, and future repairs. Complex patterns or diagonal layouts may require additional wastage allowance. Use our tile calculator or contact our team for precise calculations.
Can these be used outdoors?
The porcelain version may be suitable for covered outdoor areas (verandas, covered patios) in mild climates, but check specific product specifications. For fully exposed outdoor areas, we recommend our dedicated outdoor porcelain tiles ranges. The ceramic version is for interior use only.
