Frequently Asked Questions

Are mosaic tiles supplied on mesh-backed sheets?

Yes — our mosaic tiles come as small pieces mounted on mesh-backed sheets (usually around 30 x 30cm), so you fix whole sheets rather than individual chips. The mesh lets the sheets flex slightly to follow gentle curves, and the joints between sheets line up to keep the pattern continuous. This makes mosaics far quicker to install than loose pieces while still giving that intricate, handmade finish.

Can mosaic tiles be cut to fit edges and corners?

They can. Most sheets can be trimmed along the mesh with a sharp blade to remove rows of pieces, and individual chips can be cut with tile nippers or a wet saw fitted with the right blade for the material. Glass and stone need a clean, slow cut to avoid chipping, so we recommend an experienced tiler for neat edges around sockets, corners and window reveals.

Where can I use mosaic tiles?

Mosaics are wonderfully versatile — they're a favourite for splashbacks, feature walls, shower enclosures, niches and borders, and many are suitable for bathroom and wet-room walls. Some mosaics can also be used on floors; suitability depends on the material and finish, so check the individual product details or ask our Ascot team before specifying a mosaic for a floor.

Do mosaic tiles need sealing?

It depends on the material. Natural stone and marble mosaics are porous and should be sealed with a suitable impregnating sealer before grouting and again once installed. Glass, ceramic and most porcelain mosaics are non-porous and don't need sealing, though a grout protector on the joints is still worthwhile. Delicate finishes such as mother-of-pearl have their own care needs, and we'll always advise on the right approach for your chosen range.

How many mosaic sheets will I need?

Mosaic sheets are usually sold individually or by the square metre, so measure the area you're covering, add around 10% for cuts and wastage, and round up to whole sheets. For feature areas and borders it's worth ordering a little extra from the same batch so any future repairs blend in. Our team is always happy to check your quantities before you order.

Can I order a sample before I commit?

Yes — colour, finish and the way light plays across glass, stone and shell are best judged in your own space. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted for a small postage charge, and you're very welcome to visit the showroom to see full mosaic sheets in person and talk through your design with our team.

Ottimo Marble Tile Collection

The Ottimo collection celebrates the timeless beauty of marble, combining detailed marble mosaics — including kaleidoscope and herringbone designs — with sleek plain marble tiles. Together they let you create elegant, coordinated schemes, whether you want an intricate feature or a calm, classic backdrop in a bathroom, kitchen or living space.

Natural Marble — Seal Before Use

As natural marble, Ottimo is porous and should be sealed with a suitable impregnating sealer before grouting and again after installation. Sealing protects the surface, makes day-to-day cleaning easier and helps resist staining, preserving the marble's natural elegance.

Mix Mosaics with Plain Marble

Pair the mosaics with the plain tiles to frame a feature, run a herringbone band as a border, or use the larger formats across walls and floors for a refined, understated look. Because marble varies naturally in tone and veining, dry-laying first helps you achieve the most balanced result, and an experienced tiler will give the neatest cuts.

Free Samples and Showroom Support

Marble is best judged in person, in your own light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom or posted for a small postage charge, and our team is on hand to advise on layout, sealing and quantities.
