Frequently Asked Questions

Does natural stone need sealing?

Yes — natural stone such as limestone, marble and travertine is porous, so it must be sealed with a suitable impregnating sealer before grouting and again once installed, then resealed periodically over its life. Sealing protects against staining and water absorption, makes everyday cleaning easier, and keeps the stone looking its best for years.

Why does every stone tile look slightly different?

Because it's a natural material formed over millions of years, every tile varies in colour, veining, fossil detail and tone — no two are identical. That individuality is exactly what makes a stone floor so beautiful. We recommend dry-laying tiles from several boxes before fixing so you can blend the shades and achieve a balanced, natural-looking result.

Can natural stone be used on floors and in busy areas?

Absolutely — stone has been used underfoot for centuries and, once sealed and cared for, is wonderfully durable in hallways, kitchens and living spaces. A tumbled or honed finish gives a softer, more slip-considerate surface, while the natural patina that develops over time only adds to its character.

How do I clean and care for stone tiles?

Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner rather than acidic or abrasive products, which can dull or etch the surface. Wipe up spills promptly, keep the sealer topped up as recommended, and your stone will stay looking beautiful. We're always happy to advise on the right cleaning and sealing products for your particular stone.

Can natural stone be used outdoors?

Many stones can, given the right finish and a frost-resistant type — a tumbled or riven surface offers more grip underfoot for patios and paths. Suitability varies by stone, so always check the individual product details or ask our Ascot team before specifying a natural stone for an exterior project.

Can I order a sample of natural stone before I commit?

Yes — natural stone really needs to be seen in person to appreciate its colour, veining and texture, all of which shift with the light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted for a small postage charge, and you're very welcome to visit the showroom to view full tiles.

Orient Rustic Floor Tile

The Orient floor tile offers timeless, rustic character for homes that value warmth and patina. A natural limestone with a tumbled finish, it brings a soft, lived-in look that suits older and period properties beautifully, as well as kitchens, living rooms and hallways seeking a touch of understated elegance.

Natural Limestone — Seal Before Use

As a natural stone, Orient is porous and should be sealed with a suitable impregnating sealer before grouting and again once installed, then resealed periodically. Sealing protects against staining, makes cleaning easier and preserves the stone's natural beauty for years to come.

Naturally Individual

Every tile varies subtly in colour, veining and tone, and the tumbled edges give a gently worn, characterful finish. We'd recommend dry-laying tiles from several boxes before fixing to blend the shades, and using a pH-neutral cleaner to care for the surface once it's down.

Free Samples and Showroom Support

Natural stone is best appreciated in person, where its colour and texture shift with the light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom or posted for a small postage charge, and our team can advise on sealing and quantities.
