Fireplace & Hearth Tiles

Fireplace & Hearth Tiles

Frame your fire with tiles built to take the heat. Our fireplace and hearth tiles bring warmth, texture and a sense of occasion to the heart of the room — whether you're dressing a wood-burner, a traditional inglenook or a sleek modern surround.

Porcelain and natural stone are naturally non-combustible and hard-wearing, making them ideal around solid-fuel and log-burning stoves. Choose riven slate for a rugged country hearth, brick and terracotta for a warm reclaimed look behind a burner, or large-format stone for a clean contemporary backdrop.

Where fireplace tiles work

  • Hearths and hearth pads beneath stoves
  • Chimney breasts and fire surrounds
  • The wall behind a log burner
  • Inglenooks and feature recesses

Choosing the right tile

For hearths and stove surrounds, look to slate, natural stone and porcelain — all of which withstand high temperatures and are simple to keep clean of soot and ash. Larger-format tiles mean fewer grout lines and a calmer finish; riven and tumbled textures hide everyday wear. Our team can advise on heat-suitable adhesives and grouts for use around appliances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles?

Both are fired clay tiles, but porcelain is made from a denser, more refined clay fired at a higher temperature, making it harder, less porous and highly suited to floors and wet areas. Ceramic is a little softer and more porous, which makes it lighter, easy to cut and ideal for walls — though many floor-rated ceramics are also available. Each product page confirms where a tile can be used.

Are ceramic tiles suitable for floors?

Many are, but it depends on the individual tile. Wall ceramics have a softer glaze not intended for underfoot wear, while floor-rated ceramics and porcelains are made to take the traffic. The product page shows each tile's suitability and, where relevant, its slip rating — our team is always happy to recommend the right tile for a floor.

Do ceramic tiles need sealing?

The glazed surface of a ceramic tile is non-porous and effectively self-protecting, so it doesn't need sealing and wipes clean easily. The exceptions are crackle-glazed and any unglazed or natural-finish tiles, which should be sealed. Grout lines can always benefit from a grout protector, and we'll flag any tile that needs extra care.

Will the colour vary between ceramic tiles?

A degree of variation is normal and, with handmade and artisan glazes, very much part of the appeal. We recommend ordering from a single batch where possible and mixing tiles from several boxes as you fix, so any natural variation in tone is spread evenly across the wall or floor rather than appearing in patches.

How many ceramic tiles should I order?

Measure your area in square metres, add around 10% for cuts and breakages (a little more for diagonal or patterned layouts), and round up to whole boxes. It's worth keeping a few spare tiles for any future repairs, since glazes can vary between production runs. Our team can help you check quantities before you order.

Can I order a ceramic tile sample before I commit?

Yes — glaze, colour and finish are best judged in your own light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted for a small postage charge, and you're very welcome to visit the showroom to see the full ceramic range in person.

Fireplace & Hearth Tiles

Our fireplace and hearth tiles are chosen to bring style and durability to the area around a fire — from characterful glazed ceramics and zellige for a surround to robust porcelain and stone for a hearth. A beautiful way to make a fireplace the focal point of a room.

Style Around the Fire

A fireplace is a natural place for a decorative tile, whether you want the handmade shimmer of zellige, the pattern of an encaustic-look tile, or the clean lines of a stone-effect porcelain. The surround and hearth are a wonderful opportunity to add character that complements the rest of your scheme.

Choosing the Right Tile

For the hearth and any area close to heat, choose a hard-wearing, heat-tolerant tile such as porcelain or natural stone, and always check the product page for each tile's suitability. Natural stone should be sealed; glazed ceramic and porcelain wipe clean easily. Our team is happy to advise on the right choice for your fireplace.
