Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between herringbone, chevron and brick-bond layouts?

These are all ways of laying rectangular or brick-shaped tiles. Brick-bond (or offset) staggers each row by half a tile, like a brick wall, for a classic, forgiving finish. Herringbone sets rectangles at 90 degrees in an interlocking zig-zag, while chevron cuts the ends at an angle so the tiles meet in a continuous V. Each gives a different level of detail and movement — our team can show you examples.

Are shaped or patterned-layout tiles harder to lay?

Patterned layouts like herringbone, chevron and intricate shapes take more planning and more cuts than a straight grid, so they reward careful setting-out and, ideally, an experienced tiler. The result is well worth it — a feature floor or wall with real character. We're happy to help you estimate quantities, allowing a little extra for the additional cuts.

Can these tiles go on both walls and floors?

It depends on the individual tile rather than its shape — suitability for floors, walls and wet areas is set by the material, finish and slip rating, shown on each product page. Many shaped and brick tiles work beautifully in both settings; if you'd like to use one across walls and floor, just ask and we'll point you to the right options.

How do I set out a pattern so it looks balanced?

We recommend dry-laying a section first and working from a central line, so the pattern stays symmetrical and any cut tiles fall evenly at the edges rather than as awkward slivers. For herringbone and chevron in particular, getting the starting angle right is key. An experienced tiler will give you the cleanest, best-aligned finish.

How many tiles should I order for a patterned layout?

Measure your area, then add a little more than usual for wastage — around 10% for brick-bond and up to 15% for herringbone, chevron or diagonal designs, which involve more cuts. Ordering everything together from one batch keeps colour consistent. Our team is always happy to check your quantities before you order.

Can I order a sample before I commit?

Yes — shape, scale and finish are best judged in your own space and light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted for a small postage charge, and you're very welcome to visit the showroom to see full tiles and talk through your layout with our team.

Chevron Tiles

Our chevron tiles create a sharp, contemporary take on the classic parquet look — rectangular tiles cut at an angle so they meet in a continuous, clean V. A striking choice for feature floors and walls where you want a sense of movement and modern elegance.

A Bold, Directional Pattern

Where herringbone interlocks at right angles, chevron tiles are mitred so each row forms an unbroken zig-zag, giving a streamlined, directional finish. The pattern draws the eye along its lines, making it wonderful for adding length to a hallway or drama to a feature wall.

Setting Out and Suitability

Because the tiles are angled, chevron rewards precise setting-out from a central line and an experienced tiler, with a little extra allowed for cuts. Suitability for floors, walls and wet areas depends on the tile's material, finish and slip rating, shown on each product page.
