Product story
A Quatrefoil In The Art Nouveau Manner
A 152 x 152mm decorative square with a raised floral and leaf motif set in a quatrefoil, in gloss sage green: the St. James Decorative Tile on Artworks Jade Breeze, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
A quatrefoil is a four-lobed figure arranged about a centre, and it is what gives the St. James its balance: the raised flowers and leaves reach out towards the four points of the tile and return to the middle, so the design resolves within a single 152mm square. That self-contained quality matters practically as well as visually, because a motif which completes on one tile can be set singly at intervals through a plain field, grouped four square as a small panel, or repeated in a continuous run, and it looks deliberate in all three. The drawing itself has the sinuous, plant-led line of Art Nouveau about it. Four tiles per box cover 0.09m², or 0.6 linear metres as a border at 6.6 tiles per linear metre.
In a green glaze the modelling does most of the work. The glaze settles thickest where the carving runs deepest and takes on a darker, near bottle-green cast in those channels, while the raised petals and leaves hold a lighter, glossier film, so the motif is legible as a play of tone across one colour rather than as pattern laid on top of it. Against Jade Breeze field tiles it reads as a quiet change of texture; against a white field it becomes a distinct green medallion. Green also moves further between daylight and lamplight than most colours, cool and blue-leaning by day and settling towards sage under warm bulbs, so it pays to think about where the tile will actually sit.

Installation & care
Installation & care
- Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible adhesive; grey tends to read through a pale glaze and cool it further still. For grout, choose a soft stone, a pale grey-green or a warm off-white and keep it close in tone. Brilliant white is wrong here, because it imposes the hard white grid that makes green tiling look institutional, and so is a warm beige or putty, which pulls the blue out and leaves the green muddy. Work the grout into the joints only, and clear the quatrefoil's recesses before it stiffens.
- Layout: If you are setting the St. James singly through a plain field, space it on a regular module — every fourth or fifth tile in both directions — and mark the positions out on the wall before any adhesive is mixed. As a continuous band it wants centring on the wall. As a panel, an even number of tiles keeps the quatrefoils symmetrical about the middle.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
Samples
Tone, glaze and veining all read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free — sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and we refund it on tile orders over £50 with the code we email you. Our family-run team is happy to check quantities and finishes with you on 01344 620211.
Delivery
In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.
Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.
When your order arrives
Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.
Returns
Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.
