Travertine With Its Edges Already Worn Off

A rustic tumbled travertine hexagon mosaic on 30.5 x 26.5cm mesh-backed sheets, by Hyperion Tiles.

Travertine forms where mineral-rich water rises through limestone and deposits calcite in bands, which is why the stone is striped rather than veined and why it carries those characteristic small open pores. The colour here runs through cream, straw and a warm nutty brown, with the banding visible as soft horizontal drift across each piece. Tumbling the cut hexagons in a drum knocks the arrises off and pits the surface very slightly, producing an edge that looks reclaimed rather than sawn — and a face that is matt, forgiving and pleasantly uneven under bare feet.

The tumbled edge is what makes this one work in older houses. Against lime plaster, a cast-iron bath or reclaimed boards it looks as though it has always been there, and the slightly rounded joints make the hexagon read as a soft honeycomb rather than a crisp graphic. Use it on a cottage bathroom floor, in a shower with a generous fall, or as a wide splashback behind a butler sink. It is warmer in tone than limestone and noticeably warmer than any grey marble.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Do these natural stone mosaics need sealing?

Yes. Marble, travertine, limestone and onyx are porous stones, so they should be sealed with a good impregnating stone sealer before grouting and again once the grout has cured. Sealing before grouting is the step most often skipped, and it is the one that stops grout haze staining the face of the stone. In a shower or wet room, expect to re-apply the sealer every couple of years.

How are these mosaics sold?

By the box. Each box contains five mesh-backed sheets, and the coverage per box is listed in the specification for this product. Work out your area in square metres, divide by the coverage per box, and round up — then allow around ten per cent extra for cuts, wastage and a few spare sheets for future repairs.

Can I order a sample before I commit?

Yes. A sample swatch is £2 and is posted to you, which is the sensible way to judge natural stone against your own light, paint and sanitaryware. You are also very welcome to see full sheets in our Ascot showroom, where you can lay them next to the rest of your scheme.

Will the mosaic I receive look exactly like the photograph?

No, and that is the point of natural stone. Veining, tone and the density of markings shift from block to block, so your sheets will be their own thing rather than a copy of the photograph. Order the whole job in one go so it comes from a single batch, then open several boxes at once and shuffle the sheets as you lay, which spreads any variation evenly instead of leaving it in patches.

Can these be used on a bathroom floor or inside a shower?

Yes, provided the stone is properly sealed and the substrate is sound and tanked. Mosaics are particularly good on shower floors because the dense grout joints give grip and the small pieces follow a fall to the waste without needing cuts. Bear in mind that a polished finish is considerably more slippery underfoot when wet than a honed, tumbled or brushed one.

Are these mosaics suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes. Natural stone conducts heat well and is one of the better surfaces to lay over underfloor heating. Use a flexible adhesive and a flexible grout, leave the system off until the adhesive and grout have fully cured, then bring the temperature up gradually over several days rather than all at once.

How do I cut mesh-backed mosaic sheets?

Where a cut falls between pieces, simply part the sheet with a sharp knife through the mesh backing. Where you need to cut through the stone itself, use a wet cutter with a continuous-rim diamond blade and take it slowly — natural stone chips more readily than porcelain. Turn cut edges towards corners and internal angles so the factory edges stay on show.

What grout should I use with a stone mosaic?

A fine, unsanded grout is best for the narrow joints found in mosaic sheets — sanded grouts can scratch a polished or honed surface as you work them in. Seal the stone first, choose a grout tone close to the mid-tone of the stone unless you actively want the pattern outlined, and clean the faces as you go rather than letting haze set.

How should I clean and look after natural stone mosaics?

Use warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Keep anything acidic well away — limescale removers, vinegar, lemon and most bathroom sprays will etch a dull mark into marble, travertine and limestone within seconds. Avoid bleach and abrasive pads too, and wipe up splashes of wine, oil or toiletries promptly rather than letting them sit.

Can I see this mosaic in person?

Please do. Our family-run showroom is at 67 High Street, Ascot, and stone is one of those materials that really does need to be seen rather than scrolled past. Bring your paint colours and a photograph of the room and our team will help you work through it. Call 01344 620211 if you would like to check we have a particular mosaic out on display.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Sealing & Adhesive: Seal with an impregnating stone sealer before grouting and again once the grout has cured. Travertine is more porous than marble and the open pores will hold grout if unsealed. Fix with a white flexible adhesive and decide in advance whether you want the natural voids grouted flush or left open.
  • Layout: Dry-lay and shuffle so the darker, more heavily banded sheets are spread through the run. The tumbled edges suit a slightly wider joint than a honed mosaic — keep it consistent, and set out from a datum line so the hexagons do not creep as you work along a wall.
  • Cleaning: Warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Acidic limescale removers, vinegar and bleach will etch a permanent dull mark into the tumbled travertine surface.
