Description

The Darkest Board: Cotswold Walnut Plank Wood Effect Porcelain Tile 20 x 120cm

A full 20 x 120cm porcelain plank in rich, deep walnut, carrying the grain and gentle patina of a real board – Cotswold from Hyperion Tiles, your official Fired Earth stockist.

Walnut is the deepest shade in the Cotswold range and the most atmospheric – a dark chocolate brown that makes a room feel considered rather than merely decorated. Natural grain runs the length of each plank with the occasional realistic knot, and the moderate variation keeps a large floor reading as one rich surface. It sits beautifully with off-white plaster, dark joinery and unlacquered brass, and it flatters a period house as readily as a new one.

Because this is porcelain rather than wood, Cotswold goes where timber cannot. Run it through a kitchen, across a hallway and into a wet room without changing material, lay it over underfloor heating, and mop it clean. No sealing, no sanding, no swelling.

The Hyperion Family Promise

  • Design Continuity - Cotswold runs across four timber shades in the same 20 x 120cm plank – pale Sycamore, warm Oak, deeper Elm and rich Walnut – so you can move tone from room to room without changing format.
  • Premium Durability - Glazed porcelain specified for internal walls and floors, shower walls, wet room floors, worktops and hearths (minimum 30cm from the heat source), and approved for use over underfloor heating.
  • Order a Sample - Darker timber tones read very differently by daylight and by lamplight, so see a piece in your own room first. As an official Fired Earth stockist, we offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted to your door for a small postage charge.
  • Dedicated Delivery - We arrange safe, secure delivery for your project, with free UK delivery on orders over £1,000.
  • Personalised Project Support - Our family-run team can help you calculate quantities: sold by the Tile — 4.17 tiles per m² (0.24m² per tile).

⚠ Installation & Care Tips

  • Setting Out: Dry-lay from several boxes at once to blend the moderate shade variation, and stagger the plank joints by no more than a third rather than a half bond – long-format planks sit flatter and read far more naturally that way.
  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a flexible adhesive suited to large-format porcelain, back-buttering for a solid bed beneath the full length of each plank. Allow a 3mm grout joint and choose a deep tonal grout – on a dark floor a pale joint will read as a grid rather than as timber.
  • Cleaning: No sealing required. Sweep or vacuum, then mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid the waxes, oils and polishes made for real wood, which leave a film on a matt porcelain surface and show badly on a dark tone.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cotswold tiles made of real wood?

No. Cotswold is a glazed porcelain tile that reproduces the warm tones, natural grain, subtle patina and knots of real timber. You get the look of a board floor with the durability and water resistance of porcelain, so it can be laid in bathrooms and wet rooms and over underfloor heating, where solid wood cannot go.

Which Cotswold shade should I choose?

All four shades share the same 20 x 120cm plank. Sycamore is the palest, a light-enhancing neutral that opens up a darker room. Oak is the classic warm mid-brown. Elm is deeper and more enveloping. Walnut is the richest and darkest, best where you want atmosphere rather than light. Order free cut samples of two or three and compare them on the floor of the actual room.

Can Cotswold be used in bathrooms, wet rooms and over underfloor heating?

Yes. Fired Earth specifies Cotswold for internal walls and floors, kitchens, bathrooms, shower walls, wet room floors, worktops, and hearths at least 30cm from the heat source, and it is approved for use over underfloor heating. It is an interior tile only, as Fired Earth publishes no external frost rating for this range.

Do Cotswold tiles need sealing?

No. Cotswold is glazed porcelain, so the surface is already impervious and needs no sealer. Sweep or vacuum, then mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid the waxes, oils and polishes made for real wood, which leave a film on a matt porcelain surface. In heavy-traffic areas a grout protector on cementitious grout is worth considering.

How should Cotswold planks be laid out?

Dry-lay from several boxes at once to blend the moderate shade variation, and stagger the joints by no more than a third of the plank length rather than a half bond. Long-format planks have a slight natural bow, so a third bond keeps them flat and reads far more like a real board floor. Allow a 3mm grout joint and use a flexible adhesive with a solid bed under the whole plank.
