Product story

Birds Among The Reeds, Across Five Tiles

A five-tile decorated panel at 152 x 152mm, birds among rushes in multi-colour on a County White ground: the Artworks Birds & Rushes 5 Tile Set, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Birds and water reeds were one of the defining subjects of the later nineteenth century. English designers had taken up the asymmetry and the natural motifs of Japanese prints, and the result was a looser, more atmospheric kind of decoration than the strict borders and rosettes of the earlier Victorian years — a scene rather than a pattern. This panel is a replica of that idiom, drawn across all five tiles as one continuous composition and meant to be laid in the order supplied.

The colour sits beneath a deep translucent glaze on the pale County White body, so the tile itself becomes the sky and the water behind the drawing. Five six-inch tiles is the height of a Victorian cast iron fireplace cheek, which is what the format was made for and where it still looks most at home. It is specified for wet and dry areas too, so it can equally well be set into plain tiling above a basin, behind a bath or in a shower, where the vertical panel does the work a window might.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Bed on a white flexible adhesive; a grey one can shadow through the pale ground and take the light out of the glaze. Keep the grout close in tone to the County White body — a soft off-white or pale stone — so the joints recede and the scene carries across them. Anything dark or strongly contrasting will cut the composition into five squares again.
  • Layout: Lay all five out on the floor in sequence first and confirm the order and orientation before anything is fixed. Vertically down a fireplace cheek is the original arrangement; on an open wall the panel also reads well horizontally as a frieze at eye level. Joints tight and even at 2 to 3mm.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time. Never use a scouring cream on a decorated panel.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the 5-Tile Set?

Five 152 x 152mm decorated tiles supplied together as a set, designed to be read as one panel rather than repeated at random. Originally these panels were made for the cast iron fireplaces of the period, which is why they suit a hearth, a chimney breast or a washstand splashback particularly well. The set is made to order, so allow a little longer than for the stocked plain tiles.

What does the Birds & Rushes design look like?

Birds among rushes, in multi-colour decoration on the County White ground, drawn across five tiles as a single panel. Birds and water reeds were one of the defining motifs of the later nineteenth century, when English designers took up the asymmetry and the natural subjects of Japanese prints — it is a looser, more atmospheric idiom than the formal borders of the earlier Victorian period. As with any deep translucent glaze, a screen does not do it justice; a panel under real light does.

How many sets do I need for a cast iron fireplace?

Usually two. A Victorian cast iron register grate is tiled down both cheeks, and the standard insert takes five six-inch tiles in each side panel — which is exactly why these sets come in fives. One set does one side, so a pair completes the fireplace. Measure your own insert before ordering, because sizes did vary and some later grates take four tiles or a slightly different rebate. Send us a photograph and a measurement and we will tell you what you need.

How should the five tiles be set out?

As one panel, in the order supplied, not shuffled or repeated at random — the design is drawn to run from tile to tile. Dry-lay all five on the floor first and check the sequence before any adhesive is mixed. In a fireplace they run vertically down each cheek; on a wall they can run vertically or horizontally, but keep the joints tight and even at 2 to 3mm so the drawing carries across them rather than being interrupted. If you are using two sets on a fireplace, decide before fixing whether the two sides mirror each other or both read the same way up.

Are there matching border and corner tiles for Birds & Rushes?

Not in this design — Birds & Rushes is supplied as the five-tile panel only, with no border or corner tile of its own. That is not a problem, and many people prefer it: the panel is designed to be read on its own against plain tiling. If you do want a decorated edge around it, the Artworks range has borders and corners in other designs on the same County White ground, and the plain mouldings will frame it cleanly in a matching glaze. We are happy to suggest a combination that does not fight the panel.

Can a decorated tile set be used in a shower or a wet area?

Yes. The set is specified for wet and dry wall areas, so it can go in a shower enclosure, behind a bath or above a basin, provided the background is sound and properly tanked and a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout are used throughout the wet zone. The decoration sits under the glaze rather than on top of it, so it will not wear or wash off. It is a wall product only — never lay it on a floor.

Will County White match across the different Artworks shapes and mouldings?

Every Artworks piece is finished in the same County White glaze, so field tiles, half tiles, mouldings, skirtings and wrapping pieces are designed to be used together. As with any glazed ceramic there can be slight variation between production batches, so we recommend ordering everything for a scheme at the same time.

Is this piece held in stock, and how is it delivered?

Artworks County White is usually held in stock. We arrange careful parcel or palletised delivery depending on the size of your order, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000. If your project is time-sensitive, call us and we will confirm availability before you order.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.
