Product story

Five Tiles That Were Drawn To Fill A Fireplace

A five-tile decorated panel at 152 x 152mm, birds and a butterfly in multi-colour on a County White ground: the Artworks Birds And Butterfly 5 Tile Set, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

There is a reason this set contains five tiles and not four or six. A Victorian cast iron register grate is tiled down both cheeks, and the standard insert takes exactly five six-inch tiles a side. These panels were drawn for that opening, as a single picture running from the hearth upwards rather than a motif repeated five times, which is why they should be laid in the order supplied and never shuffled.

The decoration is a nineteenth-century replica from the period when English tile makers turned away from geometry and filled fireplace panels with birds, insects and foliage instead. It sits beneath a deep translucent glaze on the pale County White body, so the ground of the tile becomes the background of the picture and the colour gains depth rather than sitting flat on the surface. Restoring a fireplace is the obvious home for it, but the set is specified for wet and dry areas, so it works equally well as a panel above a washstand, behind a range or set into plain tiling in a shower.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive — a grey adhesive can shadow through a pale ground and dull the decoration. Grout in a soft off-white or warm stone tone kept close to the County White body, so the joints disappear and the five tiles read as one picture. A dark or strongly contrasting grout draws a grid straight across the drawing.
  • Layout: Dry-lay all five in sequence before mixing any adhesive and check the order and the way up. In a fireplace they run vertically down each cheek; if you are using two sets, decide first whether the two sides mirror one another or both read the same way. Keep joints tight and even at 2 to 3mm.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time. In a fireplace, let soot deposits soften with warm water rather than scouring them off.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the 5-Tile Set?

Five 152 x 152mm decorated tiles supplied together as a set, designed to be read as one panel rather than repeated at random. Originally these panels were made for the cast iron fireplaces of the period, which is why they suit a hearth, a chimney breast or a washstand splashback particularly well. The set is made to order, so allow a little longer than for the stocked plain tiles.

What does the Birds And Butterfly design look like?

It is a multi-coloured decoration of birds and a butterfly, printed and glazed onto the County White ground so the pale tile reads as the background of the picture. It is a replica of a nineteenth-century design, from the period when English tile makers were filling fireplace panels with birds, insects and foliage rather than geometry. The five tiles are drawn as one continuous panel. Because a photograph flattens a translucent glaze, this is a design worth seeing in the showroom before committing.

How many sets do I need for a cast iron fireplace?

Usually two. A Victorian cast iron register grate is tiled down both cheeks, and the standard insert takes five six-inch tiles in each side panel — which is exactly why these sets come in fives. One set does one side, so a pair completes the fireplace. Measure your own insert before ordering, because sizes did vary and some later grates take four tiles or a slightly different rebate. Send us a photograph and a measurement and we will tell you what you need.

How should the five tiles be set out?

As one panel, in the order supplied, not shuffled or repeated at random — the design is drawn to run from tile to tile. Dry-lay all five on the floor first and check the sequence before any adhesive is mixed. In a fireplace they run vertically down each cheek; on a wall they can run vertically or horizontally, but keep the joints tight and even at 2 to 3mm so the drawing carries across them rather than being interrupted. If you are using two sets on a fireplace, decide before fixing whether the two sides mirror each other or both read the same way up.

Are there matching border and corner tiles for Birds And Butterfly?

Yes — and unusually there are two versions of each. We stock Birds And Butterfly Border on County White (1) and (2), and Birds And Butterfly Corner on County White (1) and (2), all 152 x 152mm and all sold separately from the set. That lets you run a decorated border around a panel, turn it at the corners, and pick whichever of the two variants sits better with your set. Call 01344 620211 if you would like us to confirm which pairing works before you order.

Can a decorated tile set be used in a shower or a wet area?

Yes. The set is specified for wet and dry wall areas, so it can go in a shower enclosure, behind a bath or above a basin, provided the background is sound and properly tanked and a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout are used throughout the wet zone. The decoration sits under the glaze rather than on top of it, so it will not wear or wash off. It is a wall product only — never lay it on a floor.

Will County White match across the different Artworks shapes and mouldings?

Every Artworks piece is finished in the same County White glaze, so field tiles, half tiles, mouldings, skirtings and wrapping pieces are designed to be used together. As with any glazed ceramic there can be slight variation between production batches, so we recommend ordering everything for a scheme at the same time.

Is this piece held in stock, and how is it delivered?

Artworks County White is usually held in stock. We arrange careful parcel or palletised delivery depending on the size of your order, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000. If your project is time-sensitive, call us and we will confirm availability before you order.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.
