Product story

Industrial Heritage: Quarry Black Square Tile

Ground your space with the enduring character of the Quarry Black Square Tile from Hyperion Tiles, your official Fired Earth stockist.

Made in Spain and inspired by the famous Ruabon quarry floors, Quarry Black is a robust, through-bodied quarry tile in a deep, earthy 'soft black' drawn from a rich dark-brown clay rather than a stark artificial jet black, lending real warmth and depth underfoot.

Naturally hard-wearing and frost-resistant, it moves effortlessly from busy boot rooms, hallways and kitchens out to garden paths and terraces, and pairs beautifully with Quarry Red for a timeless chequerboard floor.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Sealing is essential: Quarry tiles are porous and must be sealed before and after grouting to protect against staining; boiled linseed oil or a stone impregnator both work well.
  • Adhesive & Grout: Use a flexible adhesive suitable for interior and exterior use, with a wider 6mm grout joint to suit the traditional tolerances of quarry tiles.
  • Cleaning: Sweep regularly and clean with warm water; avoid harsh acids and bleaches.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Fired Earth ranges are returned through Fired Earth’s own returns process, and special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Are these tiles jet black?

No, they are described as an "earthy toned black." They are made from a very deep brown clay which gives them a softer, charcoal-black appearance rather than a stark artificial black. Sealing with Boiled Linseed Oil will darken them further.

Do they need sealing?

Yes. Quarry tiles are porous clay and must be sealed to protect against stains. This also helps to enrich the colour. We recommend Lithofin MN Stain Stop or traditional Boiled Linseed Oil.

Can I use them outside?

Absolutely. Quarry Black tiles are frost-resistant and have a naturally textured surface that provides good slip resistance, making them ideal for garden paths and patios.

Are they suitable for a hearth?

Yes. Quarry tiles are heat resistant and are a traditional choice for fireplace hearths. The dark colour is particularly practical for hiding soot marks. Install at least 30cm away from the direct heat source.

Why buy from Hyperion Tiles?

We are Fired Earth specialists. We can supply the correct sealers and grouts to ensure your traditional quarry floor is installed correctly and lasts for generations.
