Product Frequently Asked Questions

What does a bevelled edge actually do?

A bevel is an angled, polished border ground around the face of the tile. When the tiles are laid, each bevel catches the light slightly differently from the flat centre, so the wall picks up a subtle faceted sparkle and the individual tile shape reads more clearly.

It is the detail that gives a bevelled metro or brick wall its classic, slightly period look, as opposed to the flatter, more contemporary appearance of a square-edge tile.

Do bevelled tiles need wider grout joints?

No — a standard 2mm to 3mm joint is normally right. Because the bevel already creates a visual gap between tiles, a wide joint tends to look heavy and closes up the sparkle.

Grout colour makes a large difference with bevels. A grout close to the tile colour keeps the effect soft and reflective, while a contrasting grout will strongly outline every tile. If you are unsure, we can send you a cut sample to try against your shortlisted grout.

Are bevelled glass tiles suitable for a kitchen splashback?

Yes, this is one of the most popular uses for them. Glass is non-porous, so it does not absorb cooking grease, oil or moisture, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Behind a gas hob or range, keep the tiles clear of direct flame contact and follow your appliance manufacturer's stated clearances. If you want a completely joint-free run behind a hob, ask us about our single-piece glass splashback panels instead.

Can I use bevelled glass tiles on a floor?

We would not recommend it. These are wall tiles: the polished bevel becomes slippery underfoot and the ground edges are vulnerable to chipping under foot traffic and furniture.

If you want glass at floor level, glass mosaic on a mesh-backed sheet is a better option because the many grout joints add grip. Talk to us about the specific area and we will tell you honestly whether glass is the right call.

How many tiles of this size do I need per square metre?

At 200 x 100 x 8mm, each tile covers roughly 0.02m², which works out at about 50 tiles per square metre.

To work out your order: multiply the height by the width of each area you are tiling to get the total square metres, multiply that figure by 50, then round up to the nearest full tile. Add 10% on top for cuts and breakages, or around 15% for a herringbone or diagonal layout.

If you would rather not do the sums, send us the dimensions of your space and we will confirm the quantity — and if you are close to a box quantity we will tell you, as it is often cheaper to take the full box. Free cut samples are available, and you are welcome to see the range in our Ascot showroom.
