Porcelain is fired hotter and denser than ceramic, to a water absorption below 0.5%. That single number is what makes it frost-proof outside, stain-resistant in a kitchen and safe in a wet room — and it is why porcelain needs no sealing, ever. The trade is that it is harder to cut and heavier to handle, so on a wall that will never be wet, a glazed ceramic often does the same job for less.

Why porcelain, and when it is overkill
Effects, and how convincing they are
Stone effect and marble effect are the two largest groups here, and modern digital printing has closed most of the gap — with the caveat that a good stone-effect porcelain repeats every eight to twelve faces, so buy from a range with enough variation for the area you are covering. Concrete, wood, metal, onyx and terrazzo make up the rest; the Effect filter above will show you how many of each we currently hold. Wood-effect porcelain is the one we specify most often for a bathroom or a boot room: the look of oak in a room where real oak would be a mistake.
Rectified edges and large format
Most of the large formats here are rectified — mechanically ground to an exact size after firing, so they can be laid with a 2–3mm joint instead of the 3–5mm a pressed edge needs. That is what produces the near-seamless floor people are usually picturing. It also means the substrate has to be flat: a rectified 60x120 will telegraph every dip in a floor that a smaller tile would have absorbed.
Finish, and where it matters
Matt is the most common finish here and the right default underfoot. Polished is beautiful and slippery when wet, so not a shower floor and not a family bathroom without thought; honed and satin sit between the two. Where a floor will get wet, check the slip rating on the product page rather than the finish name.
Outside, and underfoot heat
A good proportion of this range is rated for exterior use, which for a British garden means frost-proof and slip-rated rather than simply hard-wearing — filter by Application → Outdoor above to see exactly which. Porcelain is also the best surface over underfloor heating — it conducts well, does not move with the cycle, and does not need the acclimatisation an engineered wood does.
