Outdoor floor tiles have to cope with rain, frost, moss and garden furniture, so the right choice depends on specification as much as looks. This collection brings together porcelain paving, porcelain tiles and natural stone such as limestone and sandstone, from brands including Ca'Pietra and Fired Earth, for patios, terraces, paths and the step out from a kitchen or garden room.

Choosing Outdoor Floor Tiles for Patios, Terraces and Paths

Start by checking three things on each product. Suitability should include external floors. Frost resistance matters in a British winter, because water that soaks into a tile and freezes can crack or flake it. The slip rating shows how much grip the surface gives; for open, often wet areas such as patios and pool surrounds, look for a textured outdoor finish with a higher R rating than you would choose indoors.

Thickness changes how a tile is laid. Porcelain paving at 20mm is made for outdoor use and is usually bedded on mortar over a compacted sub-base, much like traditional paving. Thinner tiles need a sound concrete slab with exterior-grade adhesive and grout, so they suit areas where that base already exists. Natural stone varies in tone and texture from piece to piece, so follow the sealing guidance on each product.

Then narrow down by look and scale. Large formats give a calm, open surface with few joints, while smaller pieces and random lengths of stone suit cottage gardens and paths. If you want a floor to run from inside to out, look for ranges offered as both an indoor tile and an outdoor paver, and compare them side by side, as colour and finish can differ between the two. View samples outside, wet and dry. Our Ascot showroom can help with planning, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are outside floor tiles suitable for year-round use in the UK?

Yes. Our outdoor floor tiles are specifically designed to withstand the full range of UK weather conditions.

Made primarily from hardwearing porcelain, our tiles are frost-resistant and non-porous, meaning they won't absorb moisture or crack during freezing conditions.

In the summer months, they also resist fading from UV exposure, retaining their colour and finish even in direct sunlight. The slip-resistant surface of many of our tiles provides added safety during wet weather in autumn and winter.

With the right sub-base and professional installation, outdoor porcelain tiles offer reliable performance through rain, frost, heat, and everything in between.

What materials are used for patio tiles?
How do you clean and maintain outdoor floor tiles?

Keeping your outdoor tiles clean is straightforward, especially when you’ve chosen hardwearing porcelain tiles from Hyperion Tiles.

For general upkeep:

  • Sweep your patio or path regularly to remove dirt, leaves and debris before they settle or cause staining
  • Wash with warm water and a mild detergent periodically to lift any marks or surface grime that’s built up over time
  • If needed, use a soft brush to tackle more stubborn areas

Pressure washers can also be used occasionally, though we advise doing so with care, especially around grout lines. Natural stone tiles will need regular sealing to maintain their appearance.

Are outdoor floor tiles easy to install, and do they require special preparation?

Installing outdoor tiles does require some preparation, but with the right sub-base and products, it is a straightforward process.

There are several methods for installing outdoor porcelain tiles:

  1. Adhesive bed: Tiles are fixed to a solid base using tile adhesive, ideal for most ground-level patios and terraces
  2. Pedestal system: Tiles are raised without adhesive, ideal for rooftop terraces or balconies where access to services underneath may be required

A stable sub-base is essential to prevent movement and ensure long-term durability, and in most cases, this involves:

  • A compacted base of type 1 MOT aggregate
  • A full mortar or tile adhesive bed

Drainage is another important factor, and your tiler or installer will ensure that the tiles are laid with the correct gradient to allow water runoff.

While we always recommend using a professional for the best results, our outdoor tiles are designed with installation in mind. Our tiles are manufactured in consistent sizes and shapes for ease of installation.

What styles and finishes are available in outdoor floor tiles?

Our outdoor floor tile collection includes a wide variety of styles and finishes to suit every garden or outdoor living space, including:

  • Stone-effect: Slate, limestone, sandstone look with low maintenance
  • Concrete-effect: Modern finishes in dark and light greys
  • Wood-effect: Timber appearance without rot or warping
  • Natural stone: Luxurious options like limestone and sandstone require more maintenance, but the results are worth it
  • Anti-slip properties: Surface textures range from smooth matt to lightly textured anti-slip finishes for pathways
  • Large-format tiles: Create a seamless, spacious patio look

Whatever your style, Hyperion Tiles has a tile to help you transform your outdoor space into something truly special. From sleek, modern surfaces to more rustic and traditional, our range has been designed to offer aesthetic appeal and practical performance.

Are ceramic tiles suitable for outdoor use?

Ceramic tiles are generally not meant for outdoor floor use, especially in areas exposed to changing weather conditions. However, they may be suitable for covered outdoor walls or decorative features.

Patios, Paths, Balconies & Structured Garden Designs

Outdoor floor tiles are a versatile solution for a wide range of exterior spaces.

  • Patios are the most common application, and our tiles offer a crisp, contemporary finish that elevates the look of your garden. With patio tile options in warm neutrals, cool greys, earthy tones and more, you can tailor the space to suit your home’s exterior.
  • Paths and walkways also benefit from tiled surfaces, creating a uniform look while offering a stable surface underfoot. Tiles can be laid in traditional straight lines or more creative patterns to add visual interest.
  • On balconies and terraces, outdoor tiles provide a strong, flat base that pairs well with modern outdoor furniture and lighting.
  • For a garden with a pool or hot tub, our anti-slip tiles are ideal for surrounding these areas. Their grip and water resistance help reduce the risk of accidents, and their stylish designs ensure your space looks polished and cohesive.

Our range includes tiles with soft-touch surfaces, warm colour tones and subtle textures to add comfort and character to every step.

Seamless Indoor to Outdoor Tiling

A major trend in contemporary home design is creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. This can be achieved by choosing tiles from the same collection for both areas. Many of our outdoor floor tiles have coordinating indoor styles, making it easy to maintain consistency from kitchen to patio or from living room to garden.

This approach is especially effective when large sliding or bifold doors are used to open up an interior room to the outdoors. Tiling both areas in the same material allows light and layout to flow naturally. Even in smaller homes, this continuity can help blur boundaries and make the layout appear larger and more luxurious.
