Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between York and Harlech flooring?

The main difference is the construction. The York collection is 100% Solid Wood, milled from a single piece of oak, offering unmatched tradition and longevity. The Harlech collection is Engineered Wood, made from multiple layers for greater stability. If you need a floor for underfloor heating, we recommend the Harlech range; if you want the traditional feel of solid timber, choose York.

Can I use York Solid Wood with underfloor heating?

No. Solid wood is sensitive to temperature changes and can expand or contract significantly. We do not recommend installing the York collection over underfloor heating. For UFH-compatible real wood, please view our Engineered Wood Flooring collections.

How is York flooring installed?

York planks feature a traditional Tongue & Groove joint. Because it is solid wood, it must be fixed permanently to the subfloor. The two recommended methods are Secret Nailing (into a timber subfloor) or Full Surface Bonding (gluing directly to concrete). It should not be floated over underlay.

What does "Select" vs "Rustic" grade mean?

Rustic: Features natural knots, color variations, and swirling grain patterns for a traditional, "country" look.

Select: A cleaner, more uniform grade with fewer knots and consistent color, perfect for modern or formal spaces.

Is solid wood flooring easy to maintain?

Yes. Regular sweeping or vacuuming (with a brush attachment) prevents grit from scratching the surface. For cleaning, use a well-wrung damp mop with a specialist wood floor cleaner. If you choose an Oiled finish, you can also re-oil the floor periodically to nourish the timber.

The Timeless Appeal of Woodpecker York Solid Oak

At Hyperion Tiles, we understand that choosing a floor is an investment in your home’s future. The Woodpecker York Solid Wood collection is the pinnacle of traditional flooring—a range that promises to look as beautiful in 50 years as it does today.

Solid Construction for a Lifetime of Use
The defining feature of the York collection is its 18mm solid oak structure. Unlike thinner laminates or veneers, this is solid timber all the way through. This gives the floor a reassuringly firm feel underfoot and excellent acoustic properties. More importantly, it means the floor can be sanded down and refinished multiple times (typically 5–7 times) over its lifespan. This renewability is why every York floor comes with a comprehensive 100-Year Warranty.

Finishes Tailored to Your Lifestyle
The York range is available in a variety of stunning finishes to suit your practical needs and aesthetic preferences:

  • Brushed & Oiled: The wood is wire-brushed to lift the grain texture and then protected with oil, creating a matte, organic feel that hides scratches well.
  • Lacquered: A smooth, protective coating that sits on top of the wood, offering superior resistance to spills and stains—ideal for busy households.
  • Hand-Scraped: For an aged, heritage look, some planks are hand-worked to create undulating textures that mimic antique flooring.

Expert Advice from a Family Team
Installing solid wood requires specific preparation, particularly regarding acclimation (the wood needs to sit in your home for 5–7 days before fitting). As a family-run specialist, we are here to guide you through this process. Whether you need advice on the correct adhesive or help choosing between Tawny and Antique finishes, our team is just a phone call away.
