Medina Leather Pale Belen (10cm x 10cm)

Handcrafted Moroccan Zellige: A Masterpiece of Dimensional Texture

Elevate your walls with the sculptural beauty of the "Belen" finish. The Medina Leather Pale Belen is a departure from traditional flat tiles. Hand-moulded in Fez, Morocco, as part of the exclusive Fired Earth collection, this tile is defined by its dramatic surface undulations.

The unique Belen technique allows the glaze to pool in deep, rich caramel "valleys" while thinning out into pale biscuit highlights on the "peaks." The result is a topographical landscape of warm neutrals that shifts with the light throughout the day.

The "Belen" Difference: Light & Shadow

Unlike standard Zellige tiles, the Belen surface is intentionally uneven to maximize "glaze movement."

  • Three-Dimensional Depth: The varying thickness of the tile creates a natural shadow play, making it the perfect choice for feature walls and fireplace surrounds.

  • Warm Neutral Palette: The "Leather Pale" colorway transitions from champagne and honey to deep toffee, providing a sophisticated warmth that acts as a "new neutral."

  • Authentic Heritage: Each tile is twice-fired and hand-glazed, featuring the organic "beautiful flaws"—crazing, iron spots, and pitting—that define genuine Moroccan craft.

Expert Installation & Maintenance FAQs

1. How do I grout such an uneven surface?

Because the Belen surface is sculptural, we recommend a 3–4mm grout joint using a flexible grout in a tonal shade like Jasmine or Light Sand. Ensure your tiler cleans the "valleys" of the tile immediately during installation to prevent grout haze from settling in the recesses.

2. Is this tile difficult to clean?

Not if it is sealed correctly. Because of the "peaks and valleys," we consider a high-quality impregnating sealer to be mandatory. This fills the microscopic pores and crazing lines, allowing dust and oils to be wiped away easily from the dimensional surface.

3. Why is a 20% overage recommended for this specific tile?

The Belen style is our most "rustic" and varied. We suggest a 20% overage so you can "cherry-pick" the most dramatic dimensional pieces for focal points (like eye-level in a kitchen splashback) and use the flatter pieces for edge cuts.

4. Can I use these in a wet room or shower?

Absolutely. The sculptural texture is a popular choice for luxury bathroom sanctuaries. The warm "Leather Pale" tones are universally flattering and create a spa-like glow when paired with brushed brass fixtures.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some tiles have small chips or "pitting"?

This is the nature of authentic Moroccan clay. During the firing process, minerals and shells in the clay can "pop," leaving small pits. These are not defects; they are essential to the handcrafted look. For the best result, we recommend ordering 20% overage so you can blend the tiles perfectly.

How should I arrange the tiles before installation?

Because the Leather Pale glaze has high variation, you must "dry lay" the tiles first. Mix tiles from several boxes to ensure the tonal shifts and geometric patterns flow naturally across your feature wall.

Do Medina Leather tiles require sealing?

Yes. While the glazed surface is non-porous, the raw clay edges and the fine grout lines should be protected. We recommend a high-quality impregnating sealer to ensure your installation remains easy to clean in wet environments like walk-in showers.

What grout joint size is recommended for Porton tiles?

Zellige is traditionally laid with a very tight grout joint (0–2mm). We recommend a flexible grout in a "Jasmine" or "Sand" tone to complement the earthy Leather Pale glaze without distracting from the geometric pattern.
