Antique Depth & Shadow: Orkney Smoked Oak

Bring the dramatic beauty of a centuries-old estate into your home with Orkney Smoked Oak—an engineered herringbone floor that masterfully combines deep, smoky hues with the rugged texture of hand-crafted timber.

The **Orkney** collection reimagines the classic herringbone parquet for the modern era. **Smoked Oak** is the most atmospheric in the range; the wood is carefully **antiqued and smoked** to darken the grain from within, creating striking contrasts between the honey-brown heartwood and the shadowed, chocolate-toned knots. The surface is meticulously **hand-scraped** and marked with authentic **saw cuts**, delivering a floor that feels deeply established and full of history. Finished with a durable UV Oil, it offers a rich visual story rooted in true craftsmanship.

Design Inspiration

🌑 Moody Elegance

The dark, smoked tones are perfect for creating a "moody" interior. Pair with velvet sofas in jewel tones (emerald green or navy), brass lighting, and dark walls for a luxurious, cozy retreat. Shop wood flooring.

🚪 High Traffic Heritage

Herringbone is ideal for hallways as it guides the eye. The highly textured, rustic surface of Smoked Oak is incredibly practical, hiding scuffs, dust, and footprints better than any smooth floor. View engineered wood.

👋 Texture You Can Feel

This floor engages the senses. The undulations of the hand-scraping and the roughness of the saw marks provide a unique texture underfoot, connecting you to the artisan origins of the wood. Browse oak flooring.

⚠️ Installation & Care Tips

  • Installation Method: For a stable and long-lasting herringbone floor, we strictly recommend the full glue-down method. This prevents movement and ensures the pattern stays tight.
  • Underfloor Heating: Fully compatible with UFH systems when fully bonded to the screed. This ensures efficient heat transfer and stability.
  • Wastage: Herringbone installations require more cutting than standard planks. We recommend allowing for **10-15% wastage** to ensure you have enough material to complete the pattern.
  • Colour Variation: "Smoked" floors have high colour variation. We strongly recommend shuffling blocks from multiple packs during installation to create a balanced, random blend of light and dark tones.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Is herringbone hard to install?

It requires more skill and time than standard planks. The blocks must be laid out precisely to ensure the pattern runs straight. We strongly recommend using a professional floor fitter experienced in parquet/herringbone installation.

What is the wear layer?

It features a substantial 4mm solid oak wear layer on top of a stable engineered core. This ensures the floor has the longevity of solid wood and can be sanded in the future if required.

Can I use this in a hallway?

Yes, it is perfect for hallways. The herringbone pattern directs the eye, making narrow spaces feel grander. The textured, rustic finish is also very practical for high-traffic areas as it disguises dirt and scuffs.

Can I use this in a kitchen?

Yes, engineered oak is suitable for kitchens. The UV oil finish creates a durable seal against spills, although we recommend wiping up liquids immediately. The rustic, textured nature of Passage Oak is also very forgiving of daily wear and tear.

What does "Smoked" mean?

Smoking (or fuming) is a process where the oak interacts with ammonia to darken the natural tannins in the wood. This creates a rich, varying colour palette—from deep chocolate to lighter honey—that goes all the way through the top layer, unlike a surface stain.

What is the difference between "Orkney" and "Dartmouth" Smoked Oak?

The finish (colour and texture) is the same, but the format is different. Dartmouth is a standard wide plank (190mm), while Orkney is a herringbone block (90mm x 400mm). The Orkney range allows you to create the classic zigzag parquet pattern.
