Medina Leather Pale Porton (10cm x 10cm)

Handcrafted Moroccan Zellige with a Moorish Geometric Soul

Embrace the beauty of architectural imperfection. The Medina Leather Pale Porton is a centerpiece of the exclusive collaboration between Bert & May and Fired Earth. Hand-moulded in Fez, Morocco, using centuries-old artisanal techniques, each tile is a celebration of raw, earthy texture and rhythmic design.

The "Porton" motif features a subtle, tessellating geometric pattern inspired by traditional Moorish gates. Rendered in a sophisticated Leather Pale glaze—a warm, sun-baked neutral—the pattern shifts beautifully between cream and clay as it catches the light.

Artisanal Character & The Zellige Aesthetic

This is not a mass-produced product; it is a piece of Moroccan heritage. Because these tiles are twice-fired and hand-glazed, you will notice "beautiful flaws"—tiny surface pits, hairline cracks, and "pitting" caused by fossilised shells in the local clay. These are the hallmarks of authentic Zellige tiles, providing a rustic depth that machine-made tiles simply cannot replicate.

Design & Styling Inspiration

  • The Pattern: The Porton’s geometric lines add a rhythmic, architectural feel to kitchen splashbacks and feature walls without being overwhelming.

  • The Palette: "Leather Pale" is an earthy, sophisticated neutral. It pairs exceptionally well with natural wood flooring and aged brass hardware.

  • The Layout: At 10x10cm, these tiles are perfect for creating a continuous, textured surface that feels like a singular piece of art.

Installation & Maintenance FAQs

1. Why do some tiles have small chips or "pitting"? This is the nature of authentic Moroccan clay. During the firing process, minerals and shells in the clay can "pop," leaving small pits. These are not defects; they are essential to the handcrafted look. For the best result, we recommend ordering 20% overage so you can blend the tiles perfectly.

2. How should I arrange the tiles before installation? Because the Leather Pale glaze has high variation, you must "dry lay" the tiles first. Mix tiles from several boxes to ensure the tonal shifts and geometric patterns flow naturally across your feature wall.

3. Do Medina Leather tiles require sealing? Yes. While the glazed surface is non-porous, the raw clay edges and the fine grout lines should be protected. We recommend a high-quality impregnating sealer to ensure your installation remains easy to clean in wet environments like walk-in showers.

4. What grout joint size is recommended? Zellige is traditionally laid with a very tight grout joint (0–2mm). We recommend a flexible grout in a "Jasmine" or "Sand" tone to complement the earthy Leather Pale glaze without distracting from the pattern.
