Moody Sophistication: Dartmouth Smoked Oak

Indulge in the rich, shadow-cast beauty of Dartmouth Smoked Oak—an engineered wood floor where every plank tells a story of depth, darkness, and distinction.

Part of the classic **Dartmouth** collection, this floor stands out for its intense colour complexity. The oak has been **smoked**, a process that reacts with the natural tannins in the wood to darken it from within, creating a stunning variation of deep browns, chocolates, and lighter sapwood highlights. The **150mm wide planks** feature a **distressed, hand-worked texture** and bevelled edges, giving the floor an established, antique feel that is perfect for adding gravity and warmth to any room.

Design Inspiration

🌑 Dramatic Contrast

Smoked Oak is the ultimate base for a high-contrast interior. Pair these dark, chocolatey planks with crisp white walls and marble accents for a luxurious, contemporary monochrome look. Shop wood flooring.

🕯️ Cozy Atmosphere

The rich, varying tones naturally make a large room feel more intimate. Ideal for open-plan dining areas where you want to create a warm, inviting ambience for evening entertaining. View engineered wood.

🪵 Alive with Character

Because the smoking process relies on natural tannins, no two boards are identical. You will see a beautiful spectrum from honey-brown to near-black, enhanced by the distressed surface texture. Browse oak flooring.

⚠️ Installation & Care Tips

  • Installation Method: This T&G board is versatile. It can be installed as a floating floor (gluing the joints), secret nailed to a wooden subfloor, or fully bonded to the screed.
  • Underfloor Heating: Compatible with UFH systems. To ensure the best performance and board stability, the glue-down method is recommended.
  • Oiled Finish Care: The oil penetrates the wood to protect it. Regular cleaning with Woodpecker's specific oiled wood cleaner will nourish the timber. Note that smoked floors can fade in intense direct sunlight, so consider rugs or blinds in south-facing rooms.
  • Colour Variation: "Smoked" means high variation. We strongly recommend shuffling boards from multiple packs during installation to create a balanced blend of light and dark tones.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What is the wear layer?

It features a generous 4mm solid oak wear layer on top of a stable engineered core. This ensures the floor has the longevity of solid wood and can be sanded in the future if required (though sanding would remove the "beaten" texture).

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes, Woodpecker Flooring provides an exceptional 100-year warranty on this product, covering the structural integrity of the planks for a lifetime.

Is it suitable for pets?

Yes. The "Beaten" texture and Rustic grade make this floor incredibly forgiving. Scratches from pet claws tend to blend into the existing distressed character rather than standing out as damage.

Is it easy to clean?

Yes. Regular sweeping and a damp (not wet) mop with the appropriate Woodpecker cleaning solution is all that is needed. The oiled finish nourishes the wood and can be spot-repaired if necessary.

What does "Smoked" mean?

Smoking is a process where the oak is exposed to ammonia in a sealed tank. This reacts with the natural tannins in the wood to darken the colour from within. It creates a rich, varied colour palette that staining alone cannot achieve. It also means scratches are less visible as the colour runs deep.

What is the texture like?

It has a distressed / hand-worked texture. It feels aged and tactile, similar to the "Beaten Oak" in the same range, rather than smooth or just brushed.

Is there a lot of colour variation?

Yes. Smoked floors are known for their high colour variation. Some boards will be dark chocolate, others lighter honey-brown. This variation is a key feature of the floor's beauty and authenticity.
