Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Herringbone and Chevron?

In a Herringbone floor (like most of the Goodrich range), the rectangular blocks meet at 90-degree angles to create a staggered zig-zag effect. In a Chevron floor (available in select colours like Feather Oak), the blocks are cut at a 45-degree angle so they meet point-to-point, creating a continuous "V" shape or arrow pattern. Chevron is often considered more modern and geometric, while Herringbone is classic and traditional.

Can I use Goodrich flooring in a kitchen?

Yes, Goodrich engineered floors are suitable for kitchens. The multi-layer construction resists humidity changes better than solid wood. However, you must clean up spills immediately. For kitchens, we generally recommend a Lacquered finish (like Coffee, Smoked, or Salted Oak) as it sits on top of the wood and repels liquid better than Oiled finishes.

Is this flooring suitable for Underfloor Heating (UFH)?

Absolutely. The 15mm engineered construction is designed to be stable over UFH systems. To ensure efficient heat transfer and prevent movement, we highly recommend a glue-down installation rather than floating the floor.

What grades of oak are available?

The collection spans the full spectrum of timber grades:

  • Select/Clean: (e.g., Ecru Oak) Fewer knots and consistent colour.
  • Rustic: (e.g., Natural Oak, Biscotti Oak) Features natural knots and grain variation.
  • Extra Rustic: (e.g., Charred Oak, Spiced Oak) Features large knots, dark fillers, splits, and heavy colour variation for an antique look.
Why should I glue down parquet flooring?

While you can technically float some T&G floors, herringbone is made of many small blocks. Gluing them directly to the subfloor ensures they don't separate or creak over time. It gives the floor a solid, permanent feel underfoot (no "drum" sound when you walk) and is essential if you are using Underfloor Heating.

Why Choose Woodpecker Goodrich Flooring?

A Century of Quality
Every floor in the Goodrich collection is backed by Woodpecker’s industry-leading 100-Year Warranty. This isn't just flooring; it's a lifetime investment in your home's heritage.

Engineered for Modern Living
Unlike traditional solid parquet, Goodrich blocks feature a stable 15mm engineered construction with a 4mm real oak top layer. This advanced design stops the wood from warping, making it fully compatible with Underfloor Heating (water-based and electric systems) when fully bonded to the subfloor.

Signature Styles & Finishes

  • Matt Lacquer: A durable, low-sheen seal that sits on top of the wood to resist spills. Perfect for kitchens and busy hallways. (Available on Smoked Oak, Coffee Oak, and Espresso Oak).
  • Hardwax Oil: A natural finish that penetrates deep into the grain for an organic, breathable feel. Scratches can be spot-repaired easily. (Featured on Spiced Oak and Foundry Oak).
  • Hand-Distressed: For an authentic reclaimed look, choose floors with tumbled edges and manual scraping marks, such as the bold Charred Oak or the golden antique look of Cathedral Oak.

Herringbone vs. Chevron
The collection offers two distinct installation patterns:

  • Herringbone: The classic rectangular blocks fit together in a staggered zig-zag. It’s the timeless choice for Victorian and Edwardian renovations, available in the majority of the Goodrich colours.
  • Chevron: Blocks are cut at a precise 45° angle to create a continuous "V" shape. This offers a sharper, more geometric aesthetic. (See Feather Oak and Raw Oak options).

Professional Installation Advice
Goodrich floors use a precision Tongue & Groove joint. For the best acoustic performance and stability—especially over underfloor heating—we highly recommend a full surface bond (glue-down) installation rather than floating.
