A Walk Through History: Fired Earth Cathedral Antique 20x20

Bring the solemn beauty of ancient ecclesiastical architecture into your home with Fired Earth Cathedral Antique 20 x 20cm Limestone—a substantial natural stone tile that looks as though it has been walked on for centuries.

Part of the heritage Fired Earth Cathedral collection, this tile is defined by its authenticity. It features a "subtly aged" surface complete with small pits, holes, and tumbled edges that replicate the worn texture of historic church floors. The palette is a myriad of soft neutral tones, ranging from warm beige to earthy grey, ensuring a floor that is rich in character but versatile in application. At 1.5cm thick, it is an incredibly robust stone, suitable for high-traffic areas, outdoor patios, and even swimming pool surrounds.

Design Inspiration

🏛️ The Grand Entrance

The 20x20cm format is classic for entrance halls and boot rooms. The heavy tumbling hides mud and dirt effectively, while the thick stone withstands the heaviest footfall for decades to come. Shop limestone flooring.

🌿 Seamless Transitions

Create a seamless flow from indoors to out. Cathedral Antique is suitable for external use, allowing you to run the same beautiful floor from your kitchen directly onto your garden terrace. View outdoor tiles.

⚠️ Installation & Care Tips

  • Sealing is Mandatory: Limestone is porous. You must seal these tiles before and after grouting with a quality impregnator (e.g., Lithofin MN Stain Stop) to protect against staining and frost (if used outdoors).
  • Grouting: Due to the surface pits and tumbled edges, grout can get trapped in the texture. Use a wide grout joint (approx 5mm) and clean off excess grout immediately to prevent hazing.
  • Adhesive: Use a white flexible adhesive suitable for natural stone (e.g., Keraquick White) to prevent staining from the back.
  • Natural Variation: This tile is designed to look old. Expect significant variation in texture, pits, and tone. Always mix tiles from different boxes for a balanced "heritage" look.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tile suitable for outdoors?

Yes. Fired Earth Cathedral Antique is frost resistant and durable, making it suitable for external patios, pathways, and even swimming pool surrounds. However, it must be correctly sealed and installed on a solid concrete base.

Why does the surface have holes in it?

This is a deliberate feature of the "Antique" finish. The tumbling process highlights the natural pits and voids in the limestone to replicate the wear and tear of centuries-old stone floors. These can be left open for a rustic look or filled with grout during installation for a smoother finish.

Is it suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes, absolutely. At 1.5cm thick, this limestone acts as a substantial thermal mass, holding heat efficiently and radiating it into the room.

What grout colour should I use?

We recommend a limestone, beige, or light grey grout. This complements the natural tones of the stone. A joint width of 5mm is recommended to accommodate the irregular tumbled edges.

Is it hard to keep clean?

Once sealed, it is relatively easy to maintain. The textured, pitted surface actually hides dirt and footprints very well. Regular sweeping and mopping with a pH-neutral stone cleaner (like Lithofin Wash & Clean) is all that is required.
