Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install Chepstow flooring directly onto joists?

Yes. This is the primary advantage of the Chepstow collection. Because the boards are 21mm thick, they are structurally load-bearing. You can secret-nail or screw them directly to timber joists (spaced at 400mm centres), removing the need for a subfloor like plywood or chipboard.

Is this flooring suitable for Underfloor Heating (UFH)?

Absolutely. Despite its thickness, Chepstow is fully compatible with both wet and electric UFH systems. However, to ensure efficient heat transfer and stability, we do not recommend floating the floor over UFH. Instead, use a full surface bond (glue-down) installation method.

What is the difference between Chepstow and Goodrich?

The main difference is format and thickness. Chepstow is a plank format (straight boards) and is 21mm thick (structural). The Goodrich Collection is a parquet format (Herringbone or Chevron) and is typically 15mm thick. Chepstow also has a thicker wear layer (6mm vs 4mm).

How do I care for the Oiled finish?

Most Chepstow floors (like Rustic Oak and Antique Oak) are finished with Hardwax Oil. This requires slightly different care than lacquered floors. You should use a specialist wood soap (like Woodpecker One Coat Soap) for cleaning, which nourishes the oil. Do not use steam mops or harsh supermarket detergents.

What does "Rustic" and "Distressed" mean?

Chepstow celebrates the natural character of oak. Rustic means you will see knots, colour variation, and grain patterns. Distressed (found on the Charcoal Oak) takes this further with hand-scraped textures, tumbled edges, and intentional surface marks to mimic an antique, reclaimed floor.

Why Choose Woodpecker Chepstow Flooring?

Superior Structural Strength
The Chepstow collection is the heavyweight champion of engineered flooring. At 21mm thick, these boards are incredibly robust and classified as "structural." This means they can be installed directly over timber joists (at 400mm centres), replacing old floorboards entirely to restore the solid, permanent feel of a heritage property.

A Lifetime Investment
Each plank features a generous 6mm wear layer of real European oak. This is significantly thicker than standard engineered floors, allowing you to sand and refinish the floor multiple times over the decades. Backed by Woodpecker’s 100-Year Warranty, a Chepstow floor is truly a finish for life.

Signature Finishes & Textures
The collection offers a diverse palette of finishes to suit any interior style:

  • Light & Contemporary: For a modern, airy aesthetic, explore the ashen tones of Planed Grey Oak or the calming, beach-house vibe of Washed Oak.
  • Classic & Warm: Embrace tradition with the golden honey tones of Rustic Oak or the deep, rich patina of Antique Oak, which mimics the look of aged manor house timber.
  • Bold & Distressed: For a floor that tells a story, choose the rugged Distressed Charcoal Oak. These planks are hand-distressed with tumbled edges and intentional surface marks to create an authentic "reclaimed" look.

Installation Advice: Joists vs. UFH
Chepstow is incredibly versatile. It is one of the few engineered floors that can be secret nailed or screwed directly to joists. However, it is also fully compatible with Underfloor Heating. If using UFH, we highly recommend a full surface bond (glue-down) installation to ensure efficient heat transfer through the thick 21mm board.
