Where marble floor tiles work best

Natural marble or marble-effect porcelain?

Genuine marble is the real thing, with unrepeatable veining and genuine provenance, but it is porous, needs sealing and is more reactive to acids. Marble-effect porcelain reproduces the veining on a non-porous, stain-resistant, virtually maintenance-free tile that never needs sealing. Installation and care

• Sealing. Natural marble is porous and should be sealed with an impregnating sealer on installation and periodically afterwards.
• Subfloor and adhesive. Surfaces must be clean, dry, level and stable; use a quality flexible adhesive, particularly for large formats and over underfloor heating.
• Finish and slip. Honed and tumbled finishes offer more grip than polished, worth considering for bathrooms and busy areas.
• Underfloor heating. Marble conducts heat beautifully and is fully UFH-compatible.
• Cleaning. Use a pH-neutral cleaner; avoid acidic products such as vinegar and citrus, which can etch the surface.
